Dr. Bob is preparing to operate on Sally for an immediately life-threatening condition. Just before he begins the operation, he discovers that she is 17 years old. Her parents, with whom Dr. Bob has never discussed the operation, are in the waiting room of the hospital. Using this scenario, discuss "informed consent" and describe what Dr. Bob should do in this situation and how his obligations might be different if Sally's parents were unavailable.

Informed consent is a patient's knowledge of the doctor's choice of treatment as well as the patient's accord or consent to it. In the case of a minor (less than 18 years of age), informed consent is taken from the parents.

This situation truthfully depends on how necessary and time-dependent the operation is. All doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, essentially swearing to put the patient's health as a top priority and to cause no harm.

Ethically speaking, as far as informed consent is concerned, Dr. Bob should get the parent's permission. However, in this case, the cost of attaining consent is the girl's life. So, the doctor's responsibility is to the patient's health and well-being first. His obligations are the same whether or not the parents are present.

The situation does change based on the condition of the patient. If the patient can safely live while the doctor obtains informed consent, then the doctor should.
