My teeth don't appear to have moved very much, but the retainers still don't want to go on.

If you can get the retainers in, wear them day and night for 1 week and then go back to night-time wear, every night.
If the retainers do not fit and you cannot get them in call your Orthodontist to have new ones made for you. He may want to use a spring retainer which can slightly push the teeth back into alignment

Retainers aren't made for staightening teeth. They only serve to keep teeth from becoming misaligned. Go back to the dentist that did the braces and bring in the retainers. Maybe they can still be used after some adjustments.

I think retainers are supposed to be tight. Since you haven'y worn your retainer in a while your teeth have probably move a little even if it is unnoticeable. For the first couple weeks your retainer is going to feel tight but then your teeth will move and it will feel normal!

If they barely fit and are tight then stick with those. Getting a new retainer that is looser will only have a less effect on keeping your teeth straight.

I'm in the exact same situation, just keep wearing them and it will become less tight in time since it's squeezing them back into place very slowly.
