Make sure the skin of the potato is clean, then pierce it several times with a sharp knife on both sides and top to bottom.

If you are using an oven, you will need a reasonable hot temperature but most people nowadays seem to have a microwave and this is a more economical method of cooking it. Place the potato on a microwave dish and put into the microwave. I find a large potato takes about 7 minutes whereas a smaller one can take about 5 minutes. The answer is to give it a try and if it is not cooked, you can always put it in again for a further few minutes.

Remove from the microwave, slice the potato and a yummy meal can be made from slices of cheese, ham and tomato in each of the slices. Put it back into the microwave and cover for a few moments so the cheese is cooked. It is a meal in itself.

Baked Potato Recipes - for any occasion.

Preparation Time: 5mins
Cooking Time: 60 - 75mins
Tip: Lightly brush the potatoes with olive oil before cooking for really crunchy skins. One jacket potato (225g) contains more than half the daily recommended adult requirement of Vitamin C.

Ingredients
Slices of mushrooms
Slices of ham, chopped
Slices of onion
Slices of red pepper
Slices of tomato
Grated cheese

Directions
Scrub the potatoes and place in a pre-heated King Edward oven at approx 200°C.
Cook for approximately 1 hour until thoroughly cooked.
Prepare the fillings in advance and store in a cool container until required.
Make a meal of your jacket by cutting the cooked potato almost in half and piling in some slices of mushroom, pepper, ham, onion, tomato - or whatever takes your fancy! Top with a little grated cheese and replace in the oven for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese has just melted.
Those potatoes not served immediately can be transferred to the top display/storage area to stay hot until you are ready to serve them.
Always use insulated oven gloves when handling hot potatoes and opening/closing the oven door.

The definitive answer: prick a large potato with a fork, and microwave it for 5-6 minutes (depending on the power of the microwave). Remove the potato from the microwave and smother it in oil and sprinkle with salt. Place the potato in the middle of a hot oven for about half an hour. It should emerge with a nice crisp skin and be soft and fluffy on the inside. Serve with butter, salt and pepper. Perfect!

You can either use a microwave or an oven, the oven will take an hour and a half and microwave twelve minutes (for a largish one)
Wash the potato, cut a few lines in it just so the skin won't burst, you can wrap it in something if you want but it's not necessary (foil for the oven, paper towel for the microwave) heat for 12 mins in microwave or hour and a half in the oven. Cut it in half and make sure its soft all the way through, add butter and whatever else you fancy, and eat. Enjoy!

2.Check it soft all the way through by sticking a knife in the centre.

3. Pop it into the oven for 5/ 10 mins to crisp up.

4. Enjoy! : )

Lots of good answers so far but one "trick" I like is....after potato is done but before you cut the top open, I lay a towel or paper towel over the potato and mash on it and break it up inside. Then I open the top with my knife slits and push on each end of the potato to open it up. Then when you add your butter and other stuff ....it goes through out the potato and doesn't just lay on the top.

1) Shove a potato up your bum
2) Preheat oven to 5,000 degrees celcius
3) Baste yourself in the lactate of a thousand post natal virgin mothers of God
4) Climb into oven, adopting the lotus position and meditate to ward off the effect of burns. Remember to keep buttocks clenched in order to retain the potato
5) At the second coming of Christ, shortly after the ride of the four horsemen of the apocolypse, climb out of the oven, shart out the potato and enjoy

Seriously, dude, it's a baked potato...
