I can speak well to this issue because I have a desktop AND a notebook running vista.

My desktop (DELL Optiplex 745) is running Vista 32-bit, but my notebook (HP dv2500t) is running Vista 64-bit. I didn't realize this until after I ordered my notebook pc.

They both seem to operate the same, but I know that 64-bit Vista is technically different and some software won't run on 64-bit Vista, so check it out first.

Another thing I've noticed is that Dell pre-installed Google's Sidebar, but HP did not. So there could be differences based on pre-installed aftermarket add-ons to consider.

Hope this helps.

Yes, it is the same software. Although depending upon some of your components other software drivers may be needed, for example if you install vista on a desktop computer perhaps all of the components were recognized in the install by vista. However if your laptop is a bit older you may have to install sound card, video card, and other drivers that were not found during the inital install process through vista.
