Ask the creditor you went to for the Credit Card which CRA (Credit Reference Agency) they used - there are only three most comapnies use :
Experian
Call Credit
Equifax
You will get their contact details from the web.
Write to them asking for your report - it only costs £2/£3. (By law they must provide)
Once you receive that - seek out where the bad-debt is from and contact the creditor involved - if your debt has already been paid off, ask them to amend your records - if not, get a repayment plan in place to clear it.
Hope this helps.

I am not sure what country you are in, but there may be a law that requires the credit bureau to provide you a free report if you are declined. If this is the case, then take advantage of the free report and see what is going on.
Also, some countries like the U.S. and U.K. require credit bureaus to give you a free copy once a year. Use the free report for being declined first (if available to you in your country), as you probably have only 30 days to claim it. You can then use the free annual credit report later for free as well, giving you more than one free credit report in a year.
Find out which credit report they used. Depending on your country, they are supposed to provide this.
Below are some major credit bureaus and links to the free annual credit report sites.
Hope that helps. :)

In the US, if you're declined for credit you're entitled to a free copy of the credit report used for the decision. The letter they send you should have the address or phone number on it.
You can get a free credit report once a year from Experian, Equifax and Transunion by just requesting it. This does not include a credit score; you have to pay about $10 for each of them.
Don't buy any other services from them, like a debt analysis. All that does is figure your debt-to-income ratio, and you can do that yourself by adding up all the monthly payments to consumer debt and dividing it by your monthly gross income.

I would start with this website. It's a really good one and it's all about credit repair. You need to clean up your credit before applying for any more credit cards or lines of credit because when you do and you have questionable credit, your score drops even faster and this is going in the wrong direction!
This website tells you how credit scoring works, how to get help and credit counseling for those in real debt and how to go about cleaning up your reports and challenge those negatives in your credit file!
You will find a sponsored link to Lexington Law Firm and I used them and highly recommend them! They helped me to LEGALLY get 10 negative out of date items off of my credit report and it was really affordable!
My score went up by 140 points out of 235 because of the help I got from Lexington Law Firm! Just remember to stay actively involved in your case! Regular input is needed from you and I was repsponsible too for getting my score up to 720 from 485!
Doing what I could do while having a company like lexington using their knowledge to remove items my creditors kept fighting me on is what got my score up by a total of 235 points in a little over a year!
Get a credit monitoring service like from Equifax will do the most good. You can check your own credit as often as you please without damaging your own score! Once you get a look into your credit, you will be motivated and until you can access your own reports, your going into this blindly.
I had problems like yours, don't delay make a change and start now! I have a nice home and a dodge Ram 4x4 Cummins Diesel, Holiday Rambler 5th wheel RV, 2 Mercedes Benz, a Cadillac Seville and a Power Wagon, all vehicles paid for!
