Forwar area refers to linear battlefield where you have front lines. You have forward area, and rear area. Forward is toward the enemy. Rear area is where the supplies come from.

In Iraq, there is no real forward area since Iraq is no longer a linear battlefield. When we invaded Iraq and were fighting Saddam's army, then there was a forward area.

Any area forward of where the big guns are pointing, the front-lines, as opposed to the rear.
