In my opinion they are backwards in some ways. They believe that God does not exist until He is proven to exist. Isn't that like, guilty until proven in/nocent?

God bless.

Basically you're asking for intimidation rights.
Why bother proclaiming oneself an atheist? Why bother to proclaim a belief in God? Neither can be proven without using a vocabulary invented by humans. I've read about early Christian theologians arguing over how many angels can sit on the head of a pin. Say what??????
Christians say they believe in 3 gods all divinely wrapped in one package which makes the Muslims go bonkers.
Why were religions invented ...to control others...to control women? The core of a religion seems to be "Fear". When that is instilled then anything can follow. A child is not afraid of the dark until another child or adult tells them about the bogyman and then laughs at their terror. Then the stories follow, all worse than the last.
We all enjoy being scared, thus the success of scary rides and Halloween. We gather each day of worship to be scared once again of offending God. Throughout the Bible is repeated the exclamation to,"FEAR GOD"
Once we attribute human failings to God such as pride, we then can slaughter other humans while defending the supposed disrespect of our God.
Intimidation is the name of the game.

I don't really see a lot of atheists trying to disprove God. For the most part, they just point out the lack of proof, which is different.

I don't try to disprove any mythical being, especially as it is the claimant that has the burden of proof. I do however, spend time investigating and researching claims that a given deity exists, but so far no valid evidence has been presented.

Edit:
The reason that believers need to prove that god exists is that logically you can not prove that anything doesn't exist. This is not specific to god or religion, but a general rule. For example, if I were to assert that Santa exists, it would be impossible for you to prove that he doesn't; this is why the claimant needs to prove their claim.

Aesity means self-existence. Aesity explains the metaphysical nature of God as a purely self-existent being that exists in complete actuality. God is not a being that is created by another god; neither does God create himself into existence. Rather, God has always existed as an unchanging, completely actualized being.

God has his Being of himself and to himself such that he is Absolute being and the definition of existence.
Since God’s essence is his nature and God’s existence is the same as his essence it follows that God is existence.

Because religious people often try to blur the lines between church and state. It is only when people who are, for the most part fundamentalists, (whether that be christian, jewish, or muslim) try to push their beliefs on others.

Other than that- The idea that a supernatural non-physical entity created the natural and physical world is something science is going to want proof of. Science is all about questioning.

The existence of gods cannot be proved or disproved.
It is for those who invented the idea to offer proof.
Some of us try to enlighten those who have been indoctrinated into the thousands of different religious beliefs that exist.
Each religion says that they are the only true religion, so obviously it is all a load of hogwash. At best, only one could be right and that is very unlikely.

You can not disprove the existence of a general concept.

We provide reasons for not believing in god because people ask us to.

Also to point out their dual standard with respect to believing in god, compared to their belief in dragons, unicorns, celestial teapots, etc.

I can say this much, as a Christian myself, I find myself thinking more about the nature of my faith owing to Atheist commentary from here. Sometimes it is a challenge to consider some view points.

But since being here, my (excuse the use of the word) fundamental faith path has not changed. And largely, its been strengthened.

peace regards

Nothing can exist or not exist for us alone, but apart from that minor qualm, I believe it's because of the big mess this God business put us in to begin with. People who claim to speak for God should be treated with the utmost suspicion, yet you embrace them. This allows them to manipulate you into doing unspeakable evils which you, being a conscionable person, would have never done otherwise.
We also relish progress, and would like to see all barriers to its fruition knocked clear out of its way. Hard to do with Theists forcing people like Galileo to recant on pain of death, and people like you and your peers (you maybe excluded, I don't know) striving to block stem cell research.
Finally, we wish for freedom from religion. We wish for a secular state where religion does not enter the public forum except in the form of chance conversations between individuals who may or may not believe. That pseudo-science not be taught in our schools alongside genuine science. All of these contributing factors and many many more.

I am neither an Atheist or a Christian, but if the Atheist are trying to push their views, then they are trying to educate to those who do believe in god that there is no god. Likewise the Christians try to educate that there is a god to the people who do not believe there is one. I am a Spiritualist myself.
Its simple.
