can people with mental health problems be deported?

when a person is granted indefinite leave to remain in this country they are given a list of conditions and warned that if they commit a crime the decision can be reversed and they can be deported. does this still apply to people who have mental health issues?

It depends on their citizenship status -- if they are citizens, then no -- citizens cannot be deported.

If they are permanent resident aliens -- then only if they violate the law -- and if the person is found "not guilty by reason of mental defect" then they have not technically violated the law. It's a loophole -- and there may be specific immigration laws that deal with it (I haven't checked) -- but until they have been convicted of one crime from a specific list of crimes, their permanent status cannot be revoked.

If they are not permanent lawful residents -- then it would be up to the immigration board that reviews their renewal applications -- but generally, just being mentally ill is not sufficient reason to revoke someone's status unless they are dangerous.

I would be disappointed if that was true. If someone has mental health issues, and has not committed any crime, they should not be stereotyped.

I agree with coragryph. If they are illegal they are deported. If they have a green card other options can arise through their mental state.
