What motor do you have, The V6 is a belt, the 4 cyl 22Re is a Chain.
We recommend the belt changed ever 60 to 90 K if this is the original belt I would recommend changing in due to age, it is rubber and will deteriorate over time.
if it does break there is no major problem. The motor is not a interference motor and you can set the timing back and put a new belt on and start it right up.

I'm not sure the exact mileage for a toyota, but my ford tempo recommends replacing the timing belt every 60,000 miles, which is a lot cheaper than a new engine when the belt breaks in an interference engine and bends valves.

When I worked at Toyota we recommend every 90k they usually break between 110k - 120k but this is in a colder climate and timing belts last a bit longer.

I'm assuming you're driving the 3.4 v6 so it should be done at 90,000 miles... although alot of shops like to recommend them at 60,000. 90,000 should be ok. piece of cake if you got tools and time.. otherwise about 4 hours labor.. while you're at it replace the water pump which is right there at you disposal once you havetaken it apart. otherwise you'll be paying another 4 hours labor to have it replaced later on... trust me those Toyota 3.4's are very popular for the waterpump to start leaking. hope this helps.

as far as i know, the 96 runner does not have a timing belt, but a chain. You normaly change it when it starts to make a noise after the 100k mark. Sometimes they last 200 hundred. It normaly make a rattleling noise when it starts, otherwise leave it alone.

It used to be 80,000 miles...Then the toyota mechanics said the belts that they were taking out were still in good shape...So they bumped it up to 120,000...120,000 is the answer!!!!
