I think it's religion. People live their entire lives doing things because of a structure that they have to follow, or else they'll get "punished" in the "afterlife." They never get to do the things they want to do unless it's alright according to their religion. They spend LOTS and LOTS of money donating to their religion, and it also causes parents who are religious to enforce it unto their children, never giving their children the chance to come up with their own opinions.

Evil is a human concept, without absolute significance. Hence, any answer would have to be expressed in strictly human terms. A reasonable approach is to define an evil act as one that is probably detrimental to society as a whole. So, the "root of all evil" would have to be bad judgment about what would or would not be such a detriment.

I suppose there are two answers to this. Jesus said that 'the love of money is the root of evil.'
But Jesus' fuller answer:
"What comes out of the man, that defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these things come from within and defile a man."

The prime internal directive of any living organism is to survive and grow in whatever environment it is in. Except for humans, this is to survive at any cost, even at the cost of preventing others to survive. For humans, there is supposed to be a moral limit for the will to survive. It is the non-acceptance of this moral limit that I believe is the "root of all evil" Note that "evil" is "live" spelled backwards. These two words form a palindrome.

The Bible tells us in God's Word that the love of money is the root of all evil. Pride is a big factor and lust is probably the most dominate factor.

Serving (worshiping) money is the root of all evil. Jesus said it Himself. A man cannot serve both God and mammon. Mat 6:24, Lk 16:13

To my opinion the root of all evil is ENVY. I see that envy creates a negative force around people.
