Did *anyone* think they were a good idea? Now, thong underwear and swimwear; fine, no problem.

But lycra shorts and then a thong leotard on top? Why??

Were they actually comfortable? (Fortunately, I'm too young to have actually worn such an outfit...)

P.S. Have I got the time period right? I think the fashion started in the mid 80s and died out in the early 90s?

RE:
In the 80s, why was a thong leotard over lycra shorts considered sensible gym clothes for women?

Apparently lots of people thought it was a good idea, cause you can watch old shows from the 80's and almost any female in workout clothes is wearing what you described. As far as comfortable, I don't know, I'm too young to have worn an outfit like that.

We used to wear high rise, bare arm cotton leotard over cotton mid calf shorts, or knee length shorts - sort of leggings. Lycra was available but not comfortable - didn't absorb sweat.

We would mix colours and have fun with this. I don't ever recall anyone wearing a 'thong' as they are made now.

Chalk it up to this:

It was an eighties thing, you wouldn't understand!

Personally, I think it was a man to design these clothes, and told those crazy women that this was the thing to do. Kind of like what Crocs are today!

Yes, your time frame is right -- and you really gave me a good laugh!

I remember those outfits, honestly can't tell you if they were comfortable, but they were in style! It is so funny to look back at the various styles through the decades, and wonder "What were we THINKING?!"

The same reason perfectly flat stomached women are wearing maternity clothes today...anything goes in the name of fashion!

its all about fashion and the trends people follow. i would bet that trend began from workout tapes like Jane Fonda. my mother had a bunch of those back in the days.

At least in the 60's they all had a excuse, they were on drugs.

i still wear this kind of style when i work out.
i do it because the leotard is practical, but looks boring and not sexy at all.
the thong just spices it up!
its not uncomfortable in the slightest either!
