My friend has a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio, which I'm helping her to sell. She had the battery replaced, and the (factory) radio has re-set itself and won't turn on. The display says "SAFE".

Is there an under-the-hood code I need to find, to get a re-set code from a local dealer? Or is there some other procedure or code I should use?

No, we don't have the owner's manual.

I should point out: we did, obviously, contact our local VW dealer. The S.O.B. wants a "nominal" charge of $35 to do it, which my friend is unwilling and unable to pay.

Yes call the dealer they have access to all the vw archives such as elsaweb, vwhub, etka, etc. it is obtained by hooking a scan tool up to the car such as VAS5052, your car will have a code that has to be used with your VIN # to access the radio code. Also if your car has one touch auto windows, they usually need reprogrammed. The dealer should be able to do this along with obtaining the radio code for free. Hope this helps!

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

contact your local vw dealer, i had the same thing happen w/ my 2002 jetta and they did it free of charge. as long as you have some paperwork that says that you own it, you should be in the clear. just another lovely safety percaution that is a little annoying! best of luck! ♥

Try this site---not free but cheaper.
http://www.radio-code.com/?OVRAW=radio-code&OVKEY=radio%20code&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=839753521&OVKWID=7086818521
Not sure if they offer instructions....
Try calling some other dealers if possible.
