I'm not sure if that's so true anymore, but when you start a new religion, and Christianity was once a new religion, you need to keep familiar things from the previous religions so that people will feel comfortable in converting. You'd want the clergy to look somewhat similar to what people were used to. That's why so many Christian holidays are celebrated at the same time that pagan or Roman holidays were--Christmas at the winter solstice, Easter near the vernal equinox, etc.

I believe that the robe is worn by most clergy, to conceal the body, the robes are designed the way they are so one concentrates one the words said not not the clergies body or clothing etc. as for the similarity.....you are now noticing that most religions have connections at some point

Just a joke on that - one graduation cerimony the speaker commented on that (since graduation robes are based on ancient clergy robes) saying something like "here we are gathered in the robes of a false priesthood..."

Everybody just laughed - no one really seemed to mind when it's just tradition to dress like that.
