Is "fundie" okay in your book or not? Some people use it as a derogatory slur, others just like to shorten words.

biblio: I never said I think you're all nuts. I'm a Christian myself. But hey, thanks for jumping to assumptions.

Strats & born again: I hope you're trolling, and not actually fundamentalists. Your attitudes are so defensive, and you both called me names simply for asking an objective question that was in no way insulting. In fact, I'm trying to be sensitive so I don't offend people with using the word "fundie." There are some great fundamentalists on this site, they don't need you dragging their names through the mud by association.

No its fine. I've been called worse.

But some ppl do tend to associate "fundies" with legalism.

Fundamentalists believe in the fundamentals of the Christian faith, such as the inerrancy of the Bible and the forgiveness of sins through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus.

Legalists are a more constricted, but stereotypical, sample of Christians. Some say dont go to movies others say dont drink, neither which is condemned in Scripture (obviously movies and other issues in modern times)

Speaking as a wiccan/pagan, I always find the term "fundie" to describe narrow minded goof offs who want to make others miserable. According to the ways of the fundies, one can't do anything that would be of this world, like eating, using the bathroom, or even having children. In other words, the fundies want humanity to become extinct.

I know it's something of an epithet, but I don't mind it. It is true that I agree with the fundamentals of the faith. If that's so bad for a person that they feel like using that as something of a slur, fine. For some people the term 'born again' is also an epithet --- but who cares? Jesus said we had to be born again, so go ahead and call me that!

Again, they may hate what I am so much that to them it's almost a curse to call me that. But it doesn't change what I am, so call me what you like.

P.S. You can also call me honkey. Because that just makes me laugh! (Cracka works too!)

I've seen many of them on here call themselves "fundies" as a badge of honor. And why not - if you're going to be something, you may as well be proud of it. And that way the rest of us know straight off that you're imbalanced. Because that's what "fundamentalism" is - a lack of the sense of proportion.

I find fundamentalists offensive. Did you know there's some crackpot group of fundies that pickets funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq because of homosexuality in the military? They show up with signs saying "God hates you." At the funerals of heroes who died for their country!!
The father of one of these soldiers is suing this group because they disrupted the military funeral of his son--who wasn't gay, not that this is at all relevant.
The idea that war is OK with them but same-sex relationships aren't just shows how totally insane they are.
"Fundie" would be too kind a word for people like this; they should be happy they're not referred to as sh*theads, because that's what they are.
Edit: Cinthia, thanks. Someone had sent me a news story about him but I couldn't recall the name. BTW, it turns out most of the people in his congregation are related to him. Hmmmm. Guess opposite-sex relationships are fine and dandy with him.

I don't let words offend me. The word Christian was originally used as an insult and so was "VT".

God Bless.

It is a compound word, that is all. Nothing offensive there.

It takes the word "fun" and kills it with "die." Fundie is short for "where fun goes to die." A sense of humor is the devil's plaything.

Bookish -- that would be the Reverend Fred Phelps and family from Topeka, Kansas and their church the Westborough Baptist Church -- you can find them on their website www.godhatesfags.com

Now they do put the die in fun (per Joe F)
