I don't know that he can assume the "shape" of God, but I think he does try to trick us into believing that he is God in other ways. We have to learn to distinguish what God would and would not try to lead us to do. If you are being lead to do something that is contrary to scripture, then that's not God. As for worshipping the Devil by mistake, I think that as long as it is God you're focused on in your heart when you worship, then that's who you are worshipping. Great question, though, it required serious thought!

What the modern western Churches teach is astoundingly irresponsible. The bible never taught that the "Devil" was a real entity-being as you are.
The "Devil" issue was a religious evolution of an idea intent on teaching that mankind has a selfish nature, nothing more.
Mankind tends to blame others for it's own sad state, the "Devil" is a modern scapegoat as "religious ones" preach the Devil resides in hellm a lake of fire and so on...
The bible was a competent works turned into a Carnival dog and pony show by ignorance, wishing and thinking others held responsibility for our development.
There is no devil, no hell, no singualr God hell bent on revenge by sending those "unbelievers" to hell, a place of torment and "everlasting" gnashings of teeth...
In Revelation we see the Prostitute of Babylon riding a beast with seven horns and also see 24 elders;
In short, this is about Spiritual development, the beast represents mankinds selfish nature (666) the "imperfect mark" (Gods mark is perfect, or 7)
We see the 7 crowns that represent the 7 glands of the body...
We see the 24 elders that represent the 12 pairs of Cranial nerves at the base of ones Skull...
As "unreligious" as this sounds, it is th true nature of Spiritual-reality as the revelation was a lesson plan on "how to" meditate and Increase Awarness towards God In This Life Time; it transcended "Death" as a doorway...call it what you might, it dealt directly with reality. Eastern Religions picked up on this and we see Buddism, Hindu's ect; they meditate, are peacefull (generally).
Western religions missed the entire lesson and turned it into a "believe me or burn" mentality...
If your Question IS SERIOUS. I recommend your seriously study world religions and step outside of ALL religions to seek reality within as your question is laced with ignorance of the "Modern Church".

God is in total control, He has given the Devil just enough rope to hang himself. These are spiritual matters that are manifested as real life actions in the minds of men on earth. The evil created in the minds of men is no match for the evil created by the Devil and carried out by men.
The Devil is the master of all lies, facilitator of all evil. He never gets his hands dirty but instead traps the minds of men to do his dirty work. His goal is creating all forms of mayhem and causing great confusion and discord among men, especially God's church. But his greatest desire is to convince man with his lies and trickery that he, the Devil-Satan, is god and that the true God will not and can not provide salvation to the lost soul of man.
"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition." (II Thess. 2:3)
Food for thought; the Bible has never been proven wrong.

when I read some of the stories of the O.T. I ponder this same question in my mind. But as for now I'm going to bed. Been up for 30 hrs. Serious answers on both accounts.

It is called discernment. It is a gift that the spirit gives to true Christians. The devil WILL mess up no matter how good he may look he cannot keep with the TRUTH of the Bible. He is the Father of lies and in order to have you follow him he has to pervert something in the Bible in Gods word so it is wrong for you to do. as long as we stay in the true word of God and pray and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit the discernment we need comes from above and with spiritual eyes God reveals the devil to us.

There are many documented cases of this happening to Saints in the Catholic church and they all knew that it was a decieving spirit because they tend to give their true nature away by subtle things like,a presence of oppression,telling half truths, sometimes even giving off a repugnant odour etc.
