To change out the barrels, seems very high priced to me, or is this normal due to higher manufacturing costs of the rifled barrel?

oh and to that smart&^% randkl or whatever, i never said i had purchased anything i was just asking if it is normal for a replacement barrel to be roughly the same cost as a whole gun. And yes, it is an 870 EXPRESS but you try to use proper designations and explanations for everything with 100 letters.

As a Dealer, I can tell you that the Remington barrels are pricey because they use expensive sights manufacturing them, that are better than any other manufacturer. They also take extra care in rifling their barrels to get peak performance out of Sabot Slugs (They have increased in price too)Quality these days is expensive, you'll see increases in accessories all over the industry.Another pet peeve of my own is the cost of replacement spare magazines. Same situation, quality but at an increased cost.
This is also the worst time of the year to get a deal on slug barrels because the fall Deer seasons are right around the corner and there is big demand for these barrels. Remington brand might cost you a little more, but the quality and workmanship is there too, and as far as I'm concerned it's worth the extra money.I've sold 14 Remington 870E Slug Barrels in 6 weeks thru my shop and maybe three of the Mossberg/870 barrels in the same time frame.
I don't know if you are aware of this but Mossberg makes rifled slug barrels now for your Remington 870 that are considerably less expensive. They have a cheaper flip up pivotal rear sight, and a standard front bead sight, but they will work just fine for a less expensive alternative. Cablelas.com,Sportsmansguide.com.Midwayusa.com, all stock these Mossberg/870 Barrels as an alternative

Yes, the price is high. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
The Remington barrels are of good quality and are averaged priced. Then there are the Mossberg 870 barrels that are, from what I've heard, good quality and fit. They are also a couple of dollars cheaper than the Remingtons.
But if you want the best, go with a Hasting's barrel. A couple of dollars more than Remington's version, but top-of-the-line fit, finish, accuracy. With a scope, they produce alost rifle-like accuracy at 100 yards.

JD is correct. The only thing I would add is that if you are shooting at ranges of 100 yards or less, which is normal for a shotgun slug, just use your standard barrel. As long as it is not a "full" choke, (which can be damaged by slugs,) it will be accurate enough for deer sized animals. Many of the shotgun slugs are themselves rifled so that they develop enough spin to stabilize in flight for accuracy at those ranges. If you want more accuracy at a better price, buy a 20" barrel for your shotgun, open or modified choke, add a set of ghost ring sights, and have a ball. I did this for my shotguns ( mossberg and Remington) and I have used them on deer and black bear out to 100 yards with no problem at all. And, it cost me half what a rifled barrel would have.
Just my two cents worth.

What, pray tell, is an 870E? Do you mean an 870 Express? If you do then it's called an 870 *Express*, not an 870E.
As to the cost of those barrels....if you came here prior to buying it, you would have been warned about the cost etc. There's not much I or anyone can do *after* you made up your mind. Then again, you apparently didn't listen *before* the sale....you probably won't now.
Go to Numrich or gunbroker or auctionarms etc and get yourself a cheapo non-vent rib smoothbore barrel and have it cut to approx 22". Then, have the same smith tap it for a choke tube. After that, screw in a rifled tube. That last inch and a half being rifled will act pretty much like an entire rifled barrel. Sights are up to you.
