I used an over the counter flea control drop that goes on similiar to Advantage. My cat somehow licked it off her skin and started acting weird. I thought she was going to have a seizure. She was really flipping out. has anyone ever had this happen to them while using advantage?

I followed the exact directions...I think the cat scratched it with her paw and then licked her paw...

I stopped using that other flea med. I want to try advantage and was wondering if anyone's cat had a reaction.
I can't afford to take my pets to the vet just for the vet to charge me to say they have fleas and I need to get advantage or another flea med...

The stuff you used is NOTHING like Advantage, promise! It will be a completely different chemical. There are many spot-ons, but they're all different chemicals. 'Spot-on' is just the name of the way the stuff is applied, it has nothing to do with what the product actually IS.

Stores are not licensed to sell the chemicals used in veterinary spot-ons, so anything you buy in a store is going to be a cheap, old fashioned pesticide that is unlikely to be suitable for application directly to animals. This is why you hear of so many problems with store-bought products - so many of them aren't safe.

The chemical in Advantage is imidacloprid. Frontline is fipronil, and Revolution is selamectin - take a look at the ingredients of the stuff you used, and I can virtually guarantee it won't be any of these chemicals. You're very likely to see the ingredient 'permethrin' in there somewhere.

Go with a veterinary spot-on, any one, and stay FAR away from all store-bought products in future because as well as not being safe, they don't work!!

Where did you put the medicine? It should have been put on the skin right below the back of the head between the shoulder blades? If administered properly, kitty should never have been able to lick it.

I'm not sure why you are asking about reactions to Advantage when you say you bought some over the counter flea control. It does sound like your kitty had some kind of reaction. Do not administer that medicine again. Are you sure it was for cats? A very common mistake is using a product that was made for dogs on a cat.

That should never be done. They have different anatomies and different sensitivities, besides the variance in body weight.

I used advantage on my cats for years. The only thing that might have possibly been a reaction is that my stud Himalayan who originally fathered a litter of 5 started to only sire litters of 1 or 2 kittens. Can't prove if that was from the Advantage though. Could have been a lot of other factors involved.

I think you should take kitty to the vet the next time you need flea treatment to learn exactly how to administer the medicine. Also stick with Advantage or Frontline. They have been used widely and are very well tested.

Pretty much the only flea control that won't cause a bad reaction if licked is Revolution. Take her to a vet and make sure she's OK....and you might want to ask your vet about using Revolution instead of Advantage. It's a bit more expensive, but SO MUCH BETTER.

Hi i'm a vet tech, YEA everyones cat will have a reaction to flea control if the cat licks it. Its not meant to be licked. Go to a VET.

put it on the back of the neck where they can't lick it next time, if she licked most of it, its bad for her, it has chemicals that can cause her to have an upset stomach.vomit. make sure you put it to where you can't lick it!
