I know many people who wait until the child either (1) out-weighs the crib or (2) they physically get out of the crib.
I however moved both of my children from the crib to beds at their first b-day.
It is a matter of preference and I hope that you do what you feel comfortable doing.
HTH!

my kids both went from a crib to a regular bed (with railings) by the time they were 2. Every child is different, but if they are starting to climb out of the crib then it is time to get them into a bed. Co-sleeping was not something I would do because they need to learn to sleep on their own. I have a friend who did the co sleeping thing and her daughter is now 5 and won't sleep in her own bed yet!

My oldest we moved from crib to toddler bed at 1 year old but our second we are in the process of converting now and she is 16 months. I say it depends on the child.

My son is almost 4 and he still sleeps with me. His crib (where he napped) was converted to a toddler bed at 9 months, since he could climb out of it.
Of course, I now have another one on the way and am thinking about taking his convertable bed for the baby and bribing him with a big boy (twin) bed.

I think it was somewhere around 20 months or so - when he was walking well and could climb up and down. It was one of those cute little toddler beds that used the crib-sized mattress. He loved it and thought it was the greatest thing, and we let him pick out his own bedspread and a cute pillow. He loved flopping down on it and going to bed, as a child he loved going to bed, and now as a college student he still loves snuggling in bed, only now his arms and legs dangle off the twin sized bed and touch the floor.

I have waited (with my first) and will continue to wait (with my second who is 18 months) until they can climb out of the crib or start trying to (being unsuccessful is dangerous). Or until they started potty training and needed to feel the independence of being able to choose when to go potty.
Other than that, I can't imagine any situation, no matter what age they are where I would encourage them into a big girl/boy bed. It's so scary that they can run around the house unattended, even with precautions....

My oldest son was in a toddler bed at 14 months... Middle son, 17 months... Youngest son, 2 years. Hope this helps! Best of luck!
P.S. - None of my sons were co-sleepers when they moved to a toddler bed. All were crib sleepers...

My daughter was around 2 or a little older. One of my friends had her little girl moved at around 1 and a half and it amazed me, so my husband and I took the bars down off her crib (its one of those four in one deals) and gave it a test run. She did great. She rolled off one time. But that was it. If you are worried about safety use the safety bars from Walmart, they are about 20 bucks and attached right to the side of the bed. Good luck!

For both my children, they moved @ 18 months into toddler beds. They love(d) them b/c it was their size furniture and i make sure I have the little table and chair in their room as well for them. I have a 31 month old right now and he's still in his toddler bed and he is so tiny when he crawls up into his sisters bed (when they're playing) and I couldn't imagine putting him in a twin bed until 4 like I did his sister. Toddler Beds are great!
