I have a DVD player that has component video and s-video outputs (and of course the composit video that I used to use). I just bought a 1080i plama TV. Should I buy component cables or s-video cable to take advantage of the new TV?

I suggest SVideo for the moment.

Later, you will upgrade to a HD player (BluRay, HD-DVD, or a up-converting DVD player) and will want to buy a HDMI cable for this.

I love component cables, I build my own and know a great site to get HD-rated component cables.

But Home Theater Magazine did a comparison of all 3 types of cables for Standard Def and came up with these numbers:

Composite - baseline
SVideo - 20% better than composite
Component - 25% better that composite

So there is only a small improvement in using component over svideo.

SVideo - $20
Component - $50

If you do decide to go component, get cables designed for HD video signals so you can re-use them for a HD cable box or some other HD source. (Ordinary component cables may just be built for standard def video that goes to 4 Mhz. HD video goes to 35 Mhz).

The custom sites can build these for about $50

component. If it is a progress that is the only connection you can use to get that feature, use the progressive out if you can, even though the display will be interlaced it is advisable to have the 3/2 pull down done in the player.

or purchase two more composite cables and use these and your current one for a component connection. no color code though.

If quality is of any concern to you, then go with component cables. You cannot get progressive scan output using S-Video.

If you want 1080i then you must use the Component cables.
