I'm going to New York next week and just wondered what the various options where. Is there a direct train or is taxi the only way?

You have numerous options you could do Take the Airtrain to the New Jersey Transit station. Hop on the New York bound train and that takes you to Penn Station (Midtown), from there you can hop on the subway to your ultimate destination. Or you can take it one stop(Newark Penn Station), and take the PATH train (just across the platform), to the World Trade Center, and thats downtown.
There are also various buses that drop you off in various places in Manhattan. Cabs are the most expensive way to go, you have to pay the tolls ontop of the fare unless you can work something out with the cab driver.

Take the PATH train at World Trade Center to Newark. Transfer to a NJ Transit train to Newark Airport station. Ride the Airtrain and it'll take you to the airport.

Amtrak at the airport station direct to Penn Station which is Madison Sq. Garden. Purchase your ticket before you get on the train. They will clip you with an extra fee on board.
Easy ride.
