Why does the Bible state that no man has seen God and lived when Moses spoke to God as a man face to face.?

I know that God spoke to Moses to come back up the mountain where the 10 commandments were written and that He would show him His hinderparts, apparently his back side. When Moses came down from the Mountain his whole face shown.

Exodus 33:19-23 describes Moses speaking to God, "face to face.” How could Moses speak with God "face to face" if no one can see God's face and live? In this instance, the phrase "face to face" is a figure of speech indicating they were in very close communion. God and Moses were speaking to each other "as if" they were two human beings having a close conversation.

The scripture clearly shows in later verses that Moses was communicating with an angel, God's representative, his spokesman. There is a good chance that this would have been Jesus before his birth on earth since Jesus is God's Word.

The Bible clearly explains who Moses saw:

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. ... 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus explains at John 4:24 that "God is Spirit," i.e. not visible to us. Therefore, anyone who saw God prior to Jesus' earthly ministry actually saw the pre-incarnate Jesus (i.e. the Word). For example, in Daniel 7, the prophet saw the "Ancient of Days" and the "Son of Man." Therefore, Daniel saw BOTH the pre-incarnate Word and Jesus Christ, the Word made into Flesh. He was therefore seeing both the Alpha and the Omega of God.
