A religion is a belief system that provides moral and spiritual guidance.
Most religions rely heavily on belief in the supernatural. God or gods predominate them.
A claim to truth is usually also a key component of most religions. Addressing this need for answers usually lead religions to assert their own creation myths.

Belief and worship of a deity or deities. A deity would be defined as a being held in higher regard than oneself (this comes from a professor I had in college).
Perhaps this is a bit off topic, but I'm seeing a new definition peddled around by conservatives. I just heard some Oklahoma Republican Senator refer to global warming as the Religion of Global Warming. I also hear "Evolutionism" called a religion. I don't know how they can call either a religion, or their motive for doing so.

Religion is a commerce in the supernatural.
A trade of belief or ritual action for some gain that is supernatural in nature and/or origin.
'True religion' is an oxymoron. Religion deals in magical thinking that filters objective reality through self interested fantasy. Contrary truths will be disregarded, distorted into compatible, likely seeming half truths, or be rendered invisible by an unwillingness to see.

Your book will be interesting! Be careful not to confuse religion with Christianity. Religion is man's way of reaching up to God and trying to put things right by his works. Christianity is God bringing salvation down to man and making things right. Thankfully Jesus didn't come to preach religion but rather to reconcile man to God. In His day Jesus faced all manner of opposition from religious people whom He detested as he knew them to be a bunch of hypocrites.
Religion could be better defined as a series of rites which are to be observed. This represents works for salvation in the religious sense. In Christian terms, we are made righteous in God's sight by faith in Jesus Christ which is something that religion cannot accomplish.
Good luck with your book!

The Roman Catholics and "Christian" fundamentalists are gonna hate me for this one, but there is NO ONE true religion.
If you believe that Christ was born and died on the Cross for your sins, then that's your "christian' religious belief.
However Bhudists, Muslims, Hindus, B'Hais and the other world religions believe that they will go to heaven as well.
Religion is a belief in a God whatever you call him or her and so you follow whatever religious dogma your faith based alliance tells to you to follow.
Spiritual belief doesn't tie you into the dogma as much. You know there is something out there much bigger than yourself who made the earth as we know it . He/She may have also created everything else in the universe as well. A spiritual belief in something bigger doesn't limit you to intelligent design or evolution but allows you to see both as valid and interacting with one another .

From the General Epistle of St. James 1:27: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Religion is evolved cultural behaviour designed to help the group/culture survive.
Cultures that developed rules to regulate health and sexual behavior were more likely to survive than groups that did not. Hence marriage.
The church sanctions sex through marriage. Sex outside the church (pre-marital sex) is not sanctioned because it weakens the church's authority.
These rules worked well for early man. Not so much anymore.

Religion is something that people use to mask the fear they have of the unknown... ie: the origin of everything... it's quite easy to make up a religion and say that "God created everything, and is everything", rather than try to answer the questions of "How, where, why, and when did everything begin?"
