under the hood they are the same. On the outside, they have a different menuing system. Ubuntu uses gnome, with the menu bar running across the top, kind of like a mac, and it has the running tasks on a separate bar along the bottom, like windows.
Kubuntu uses the KDE interface, which has the one bar along the bottom and the start button in the bottom right corner, it's more like windows.

Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop.

Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop. This is easier to learn for Windoze users, IMHO.

Google for them.
