Hogback Mtn is in Upper SC's "Dark Corner" near the western NC state line (Landrum/Tryon area). I've found nearly 30 musket balls in just walking around - either a battle site or firing range? I'm most curious as to the probable timeframe - balls do have white crusting - some are intact, some have flattened side.

I'm no expert, but I would be willing to guess they're from the Revolution. I base this guess on the premise that most "guns" of the Civil War had rifling and the evidence of that would show up on the slug. Revolutionary weapons had no rifling and were therefore anything but accurate. Any target at thirty to fifty yards out was relatively safe from harm.

I have heard that georgia cliff mountain was a look-out point for the confederacy during the civil war. I havent heard of any major battles that took place around the tryon area so it was likely just a target range.

hard to say. im guessing since you are just finding the one type and size that perhaps it was just a firing range. I have heard that there was a CS camp down the road from me (i'm in jasper county in the low country) I havent checked it out yet.
