My wife has been taking synthroid for years. Her doctor has cut her dosage. Now she itches all over. Any connection?

Hello,

It's possible that she now is not getting enough, replacement thyroid hormone. I wonder what symptoms she had just *before* her problem was diagnosed? Presumably she had some symptoms which led to the diagnosis of "low thyroid," - was skin itching one of them?

Hopefully the lowering of her thyroid treatment was done on the basis of a blood test? Ladies with this problem usually get a blood test every so often. Perhaps she needs another blood test doing.

Her doc will probably want to consider other reasons for all-over itching, especially if she has a skin rash with it?

Hope this is of some help. Belliger (retired UK GP)

I had the same problem when I switched from taking Synthroid to a generic brand. There is something in the binding agent that I'm allergic to. I got welts all over and itched like crazy.

But just lowering a dosage of the same medication, shouldn't have that type of effect.

My answer is yes it could. Go back to the Doctor and get her medication increased or changed. The Thyroid Gland is an amazing thing. The body functions that it has a part and control in and how not enough of it can affect the person. Get her to her doctor soon.. good luck
