Has this been something that was taught since the beginning of your religion by Russel? ..When did this belief come about?

Hi Lisa,
The name Michael appears 15 times in Scripture. Ten instances are relating to members of houses of Israel. The other five are in relation to a heavenly being.

Three times in the Book of Daniel, 10:13,21; 12:1.
Once in Jude verse 9.
Once in Revelation, 12:7.

The name means "Who is like God."

As you can see from your respondents there are a variety of opinions on who this being is. This angelic Michael figures in much extra-biblical literature in the intertestamental period.

Some are of the opinion that the term archangel means "chief of the angels" as an archbishop is chief of the bishops. Whilst others contend that Jesus is never referred to as an angel.

This also can lead to arguments when the "Angel of the LORD" is mentioned. This term appears 64 times throughout Scripture.

In 47 instances Angel is written as a proper noun in the Old Testament and only 5 times as a noun.
In the New Testament angel is usually written as a noun and only once appears as a proper noun in Stephen's sermon where he quotes from the Old Testament. Acts 7.

Whilst there are differences of opinion, scholarship generally agrees that the term Angel of the LORD refers to Christ as a messenger from Yahweh.

So it can be argued that Jesus has been referred to as an angel in Scripture!

The question is, "Does it make any difference?" Is it a salvation issue? NO!

Whenever a discussion generates more heat than light the only winner is Satan himself.
Satan loves to get us embroiled in senseless arguments that bring out the spirit of the old man and deny Christ!

JW's and some sections of Adventism have taught and do teach that Michael and Christ are one and the same, but is certainly not one of the doctrines of the Adventist church as some claim.
God Bless,
H'chat.

Knowing Russell just came out of Christendom, he did not believe Jesus was Michael when the Bible students was first around. Before the apostasy took effect on Christianity, it was taught.

Remember that the Jesus only got the name "Jesus" here on earth, and was never called it in his pre-human existence. Jesus said in his prayer that he was given his name (Jesus) (John 17:11).

Luke 1:31
You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to GIVE him the name Jesus.

So what was Jesus name prior to this?

Anyway...

If anyone want scriptural facts that Jesus is Michael goto this website.

Why does Daniel chapter 12 say that Michael will resurrect the dead, but in John chapter 5 it says that Jesus will?

Well thats wrong.. The prophecy in Daniel is said to be Michael, but in John its said to be Jesus Christ. Theres no where in the Bible that says this prohecy has changed.

No. Originally, Charles Taze Russell taught that Jesus was God in the Flesh. It was only later that the organization changed that teaching.

Rubbish. Pure poppycock. Balderdash.

Jesus is GOD. Angels, to include Archangels, are CREATED BEINGS. Never the twain shall meet.

To claim that Jesus was, is, or ever will be an angel is pure HERESY.

(oh yes, I compared your Thessalonian verse and your John verse. To say that Christ has the 'VOICE' of an archangel does NOT mean He *IS* an archangel.)

EDIT - To JR. If I tell you that I'm building my house, does that mean I'm actually, physically building it, or having it built by contractors? Michael, just like all the other angels are tools of the Most High. He will use Michael, but that does not mean He is Michael.

No. The teaching went into effect when Rutherford became the second president of the Watchtower Society.

I don't know about JW's but it's in the bible, so I'm fairly sure that Christians believe that too. You should compare 1 Thessalonians 4:16 and John 5:25-28 to see one of the strongest cases for supporting the idea that Michael is Jesus.

Dear Lisa,

That's a good question.

I'm not and never have been a Watchtower witness but I have to reply to your first answerer.

It is NOT in the Bible in any way shape or form.
It IS in the Watchtower teachings ONLY.

When I had a discussion with 2 jws last December regarding Michael they insisted that their book What the Bible Really Says would provide the necessary proof. IT DID NOT DO ANY SUCH THING!!!

For His glory,

It may interest you to know, first off, that other professed Christians long ago taught that Jesus is Michael the Archangel. It was not a teaching peculiar to Jehovah's Christian Witnesses.
