last night i put a 10 pound plate on my back in a bag and i found pullups hard to do can i gain strength from that exercise

Yes- you can and will gain strength in your arms, shoulders, upper back and core muscles from the pull ups.
They are super hard to do! I tip my hat to you and wish you luck! :-)

pull ups are hard try push ups or sit ups first.
