You can be a rock and be a cop. Knowing how to spell helps but is not required.

Skills required - Willingness to drive around all night doing nothing

Willingness to give tickets for stupid reasons

Desire to harass people that look suspicious or not so suspicious but you are bored.

Always feeling as if everyone is against you and you can't hang out with none police officers

The ability to make speeches to drivers you pull over explaining how dangerous what they did way and come up with unrealistic possible outcome 'if this would have happened'.

being an alarmist (everything is a big deal)

hopping someone runs so you can chase

Intelligence will just get in the way and you will quit. You may go into it thinking you want to help people but you are told its not your job and encouraged to not assist and help. (call someone who can do it) your job is to give tickets.

The best cop on TV is the one on Simpson's, that is closer to reality than CSI.

smartness comes with experience, however you need to have courage and mindset that you can do it when it comes to be a cop, when you try to get that job the basic tests and interviews being done by the authority can make out wether the candidate is capable enough to be a cop...

Most cops like to eat alot of "supper". To seriously answer your question, they need to be pretty intelligent to be a good cop. After awhile on the job, cops learn to be some of the best psychologists around. They get to know the nature of people. but it does take intelligence.

i wouldn't say that you need to be super smart but i would say that you need to have basic knowledge to get your job done. i dont think that you would need to study anything specific either. pretty much i think that the main thing that you need is street knowledge. and trust your instincts, ALWAYS! good luck :)
