Okay, a couple weeks ago I bought my girlfriend of 8 months a christmas gift- a three stone diamond ring that was intended to be a christmas gif NOT an engagement ring, even though she kind of wanted one. Anyway, being as nosy as she is, she soon got us into the store that i had bought it at and tried vitually every piece of jewelery on, of course including the one i bought. Obviously she didnt know it, but the one I bought she said her supervisor at work already had and she said it would look better on her though but it wasnt one of the rings she was very excited about. What do I do now? Exchange it for one she really wanted? Go with a whole different ring she didnt see? She knows it wont be an engagement ring, I'm only 20 and I'm not ready to make that mistake yet, but I was so excited about this gift ( I spent 1500 dollars on it) now i think it was a mistake and I dread christmas coming. I dont know what to do.

Thanks for your help guys, I cant get her a necklace because she already has one I got her and she doesnt want another to compete with it, and she doesnt want a bracelet because she wont wear it. She doesnt hardly wear earings except for hoops so thats out too. I wanted to show her that I love her and I want to be with her, almost like a pre engagemtent ring, you know, but me a year or two to take my time with out her getting ansy about it. She knows I already got her something so if I go get what she wanted she'll know its not really genuinely what I wanted to get her but I guess I'll wait till it comes back from getting sized and then consider exchanging it.

Go back to the shop and explain the situation and ask them will they allow you to return the ring for a full credit to allow you to choose another ring from the same shop of the same or greater value.

Buying her a diamond ring like that will send the message that you want to be engaged. People do give promise rings which sends the message that you eventually will be engaged.
See if you can exchange the ring. For $1500.00 you should be able to purchase a very nice gemstone ring accented with diamonds. You could get her your birthstone or hers put into a ring setting.
Since it has been sized the store may not give you a credit. Be sure to let her know that the ring is a Christmas present/promise ring. Eventually when the time is right you will get her an actual engagement ring. Maybe you can find a cute promise ring poem to include in the ring box.

Exchange the ring for something that is not a diamond but has other stones in it. This way it will be really clear that its not an engagement ring and will be a real surprise. You could also exchange it for beautiful diamond earings or a necklace. Sorry that your wonderful surprise got spoiled. You girlfriend is lucky to have such a thoughtful boyfriend.

Absolutely - exchange it. And be grateful that you got this info from her. Exchange it for the one she likes or an entirely different ring that she didn't see. She probably took you in there to SHOW you what she likes.
Also - I'd make sure that she's VERY CLEAR on the fact that it's not an engagement ring. You say "she kind of wanted one." PLEASE - the girl has you in jewelry stores with her while she's trying on diamond rings. She wants to be engaged!!!
Wait - I just read "bells" answer. She is right. Exchange it for a necklace. That way there is no confusion.

I'd say exchange it for another piece of jewlery or something else entirely. You wrote, "i'm only 20 and i'm not ready to make that mistake yet" then why would you spend that much on someone? -a ring would give her the impression of an engagement but as others wrote a necklace or bracelet wouldn't.

Yikes!
Diamond ring implies a deep commitment, if you are not ready for that - don't do it!
If you must buy a ring go for something else for example: (her) birth stone ring or pearl ring, sapphire, amethyst, opal - along those lines.
You will be able to buy a piece really spectacular with $1500.

i agree with jack, but are you sure you want a ring that is such a big deal? perhaps you should go for a different piece of jewelry like a tennis bracelet or necklace. that way, although she wants an engagement ring, you aren't leading her that way because no matter what that is where her mind is going to go with it... but yeah def. return it and get something else.

Take the ring back get your money back and take her on a trip somewhere instead. She's going to think it's an engagement ring since you spent so much money on it.

you shouldn't mislead her with that ring. I know you meant well.....But I agree with the the chic that said get her a diamond) pendent (necklace) They have them for that price and it would be a beautiful present on your part. DO NOT BUY HER A RING...she will feel that it is the next step, even if you are not on the same page...good luck!

Get your money back and buy her a nice scarf. Use the money you saved for a nice ski trip or go to Cancun.
