It was probably true some time back, however because of new travel restrictions, to Canada, many more are applying for passports in the northern states.

the number is accurate. People here don't file for passports unless they need to travel out. Because most people don't travel out of the US a lot, they don't file.
Another reason is that it expires and people hardly even noticed until they need it.
With the recent law that Americans need to have passports when crossing any border, more and more people would file and the percentage would go down.

This may have been true in the past but now you need them for Mexico, Canada and most cruise destinations so I'm sure the percent has risen. My whole family has them.

Maybe, I can tell you that I don't, neither does my husband, father, mother, step-mother, step-sisters (2), actually I know a LOT of people who don't. You didn't really need it to travel before, so why get one when you could just use your birth certificate & ID? Now that you HAVE to have one to travel I bet more Americans will get them.

Well they probably wont bother now anyway- the $ is so worthless under "I hear voices from God" Bush, they cant afford to stay abroad!
well guess they could take some rolls of toilet paper... probably be worth more soon...

I don't have one, I haven't been out of the US, so why would I need one.
