are they paid for being first ladies? and, if there is no salary for that, isn't it implying that women are supposed to be housewives and attend official ceremonies by simply 'being next to her man'?
decorative, i mean, and nothing else?

First ladies aren't paid because they are not elected officials. It isn't discrimination, if they wanted to be president, no one is stopping them from running for office.
