You got to be a friend, philosopher and guide, if your sub ordinates think you are just a boss because of your seniority then it is disaster. They should feel that you deserve to be boss because you possess leadership quality. Try to occasionally give them remarks like well done, good job, and develop personal relationship understand background, never miss out on attending to some functions at their place, it will give an insight into their family background and culture. This way you can win their hearts and mind. Then you can afford to be tough once you are in total control. Good luck

Give them clear direction of what is expected of them when they are hired. Give good immediate feedback when they dont perform well and suggestions on how to improve. Set a good example and always be open and fair minded. You have a right to expect a certain amount of work for a certain pay and everyone understands this basic fact. The hurt feelings come in how you manage getting this accomplished.

You probably think that to get people to do work, they must respect you.True. But to make people respect you, you don't have to be mean! You need to show them that you're the GOOD guy, not the really mean boss. I had a boss who would never do any work himself, and then yell at us to do the work quicker. We always felt hurt by that. You should prove that you DO do work so that they don't feel overworked. Also, try raising your voice very little, but do scold them for making a really stupid mistake. If you never get angry then they will walk all over you.

well those who r aware of their responsibilities wont feel hurt if asked to do some job.
those who arent responsible enough will always be hurt no matter how u put it.
so dont shy away from getting a job done from subordinates coz ultimately its your performance which might be linked with it.
