Because millions of people ride them daily - and we are bacteria factories. and yes, some people piss themselves. some don't shower, others are on drugs and like to sweat (bacteria) and well, it just smells when you are pressed together.

I'd say its cos of the drunk men who travel at night, they obviously pee in there, hence the stench

because homeless people sleep in there at night, and they also use the bathroom there
