Hi,
Recently I was rushed to the emergency room because I was unconcious, my breathing was very shallow and my blood pressure and heart rate were starting to drop dramatically, the paramedic said when we neared the hospital I started to "crash" so they called ahead to recuss..
Once in recuss it took them 3 hours to stabilise me to a stable but critical condition and I was in intensive care unit in a coma on life support with a nasal gastric tube in and a cathather..

Everyone is saying I came very close to death because I went into respiratory arrest but I just can't seem to believe them, I view near death as when a person needs to be defibrillated and their heart stops beating and what not..

Is what I went through close to death?

Defibrillation is only when your heart goes into fibrillation, generally as a result of not getting enough oxygen. Since you stropped breathing, you would get to that point within another minute or two. That much is a medical certainty. Also, most people don't realize it, but the further down that road you travel, the harder it is to bring you back. Medically speaking, every second counts.

You're quibbling over the semantics of a lousy one or two minutes. It I were you, I would be thanking the medics and the ER staff for pulling you back from death's doorstep after you had already stepped through the threshold.

So yes, you were already at a point where, if someone else did not act on your behalf, would be taking the long dirt nap instead of splitting hairs on Yahoo.

If you were in ICU on life suport, that means that machines were breathing for you, however if you still brain activity and your heart is still going, you are not dead, nor close to it. When medics say you are crashing, that normally means that your vital signs are decreasing and that you need assistance right away

Yes and no, If they had done nothing, you would have likely died, however, I went thru the same thing and just because they dont defib you doesnt mean anything. You should now just take better care of yourself.
