ive always just called it a love bite ever since i was little. she has been doing it as long as i can remember. she only does it when shes purring REALLY really loud and she hugs you all over and licks you. then all of the sudden she'll reach down and give you this little nibble or something. she is kind of a weird cat (no offense roxy) lol. my mom calls her our house clown. but i dont know if that little bite thing is just another one of her weird little things or if other cats do that too. please help

Not sure why they do it but my cat does exactly the same thing yours does, it is definitly not a 'stay away' bite, more of a "I love you nibble'

From what I've experienced with my cats, it appears to be a sign of deep affection. I had a 20 year old that had done this most of her life from the day I found her as a 6 mos. old kitten. She would do the hugs and licks - just like your cat - and then the little "love bites". It is not really abnormal and - along with other behaviors like "suckling" on hands, arms, or what ever and "kneading" - most other cats (depending on what happened to them as they were younger up to how they are being handled now) do the same thing. There is nothing to be concerned about.

When cats groom each other, they lick and nibble, so it's a sign of affection when she does it to you.

Sometimes they give little "love bites" out of the blue. They usually do this by very gently holding your flesh between their teeth for a couple of seconds. It's feels more like a pinch than a bite and won't be painful.

Don't worry, she sounds like a very happy and loving little girl.

Yea I call them love bites too.
I have 2 cats and only of them do it.
Her name is Midnite.. she likes to lick feet and lick hands she has a pattern of , Lick Lick, Bite, Lick Lick, Bite.
Not a hard bite just like a light gnaw.
I've been told that I shouldn't let her that but she seems to be so happy, like you said purring really loud just being lovely dovey.
The other cat I have is her sister and she cleans her and bites her neck in the same patterned fashion as she does to me.
Must be the way Cats Kiss.

I used to have a cat that did that. She would be sitting right next to me which was her favorite spot. She would purr her little heart out and paws on me with her feet, and every now and then she would lash out with this love bite, and might I add, she used to nearly draw blood, and she would do this while purring loudly. It wasn't something that I liked, but what can I say, she was a wacko. Her name was Mia and she was a Turkish Van.

i have four cats (ages 17 yrs to 13 yrs)...and yes all of them do that little "love bite or nibbling thing".

Since it is not a hard bite...it is a show of affection to you.

keep up the good work...your kitty really ♥s you.

Not at all weird! When cats are babies, they play with their mommies and siblings like that. It means they view you as a family member and friend, even an equal.

Your kitty loves you!
