When I see a Bible in my room , I get the distinct feling that some self-rightous Christian person is telling me " You should behave in the manner that the Christians tell you is in accordance with the Bible . If you don't , there is something wrong with you and you will burn in hell . " This is not the type of message I appreciate being greeted with
when I vacation .
PS Some Atlantic City Casinos now refuse to let the Gideons place their religious material .

I travel frequently, and I request a "bible free room", and sometimes, the person I am talking to has no idea what I am talking about. But I insist. If I go to my room, and there is a bible in that room, after requesting politely to not have one there, and they expect me to pay money for that room, I call the next hotel, or even motel down the road and go there. No disrespect to christians, but I am not an easy going atheist in real life, I am "in yo face" atheist in real life.

hoooo boy...

let's pretend for a moment that I am not a Christian. Do I get offended if someone puts a Time magazine or a bar of Dove soap in my room---NO. I want as much stuff in the room that I can use as possible...I happen to be a person who puts some value on the Bible, ok? but if there are motivated people who put a Quoran, or a hindu thing, or a scientology thing in the room, hey, no prob. Whatever works.

Here is the uncomfortable question that you must answer. What is it about Christianity that you are battling against? the Gideon Bible in the room is not asking for a contribution---it is one of the only things in the room that you are ALLOWED to steal---go ahead and take it. somehow, someone who is not representing any particular flavor of Christianity---someone who is not going to make money on this---wants you to have this text available to you. Do you get it? do you?

I doubt it.

But the bare naked fact remains that a Gideon Bible is in that room because someone with pure motives wants this to be available to you. No one is trying to get your money. no one is trying to get you to join a particular religion, uh, well, that's kinda wrong, but there are so many flavors of Christianity, you know, this is not a Catholic thing, or a Baptist thing, or a Methodist thing, or a morman thing.

Really, it's not such a bad thing to read. you might even like it

Firstly, an atheist material is any book. You could give an atheist a bible and it would instantly become an atheist material as atheists simply do not look any further into the bible than acknowledging that it is a collection of stories.

Also scientology guard their material with their lives, you would never find that.

As for the bible or any other holy work, I would prefer not to have it there, only because you would never find me reading it as it is a terribly idiotic collection of stories.

As a matter of trivia, many suicides and murders commited at motels occur after said person has read the bible... read that how ever you like.

I think most folks with any Spiritual inclination tend to bring their own materials. America is considered a Christian country and it is unlikely that hotels would start to include other materials. It would cause too much trouble and those materials would probably end up in thrown in the trash by the less than tolerant majority of those Christians.
I am a Pagan and have a travel altar. The Bible stays respectfully tucked away in the drawer it was in when I got there.

It's the same as finding any other book, just more violent and humorous. And only bad will come of putting other religious materials in hotels.. We are a Christian nation and its normally the Christians that get the most pissed off about things. If you wanna read about my religion, use the free internet in the room, lol.

The hotels don't provide the bibles. The Gideons do and they provide them free.

If another sect wanted to provide free religious texts, I'm sure the hotels would put them in the drawers too.

I don't care one way or another as I never read the one in the motels/hotels. IF I want to read religious material that wouldn't be the place that I would look for it any way. I do wonder why the custom started?

I couldn't care less, as long as the room's nowhere near the ice machine and I can see the pool from my window.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever stolen a Gideon Bible from a hotel room? Just for the irony?

They do include Atheist materials, it's called cable TV. Scientology is a small group, and Quo'ran is more mid eastern. I did not know they still did that in motel rooms.

I just don't understand why they're there to begin with. It's not like many people read the Bible in their hotel room. They could just as well keep Bibles at the desk and be available to rooms on request.

When I'm in Las Vegas I like to take a call girl flyer and stick it in "Song of Solomon". I figure anybody reading that part of the Bible anyway is probably interested in the real thing. I'm here to help.
