Haha, I feel you on this one.
When I was younger, I always had to eat congee when I was sick. However, depending on what I had, sometimes the congee would be really salty. It tasted nasty, but it worked. I always felt better faster. When I was in college and I was starting to feel feverish or like I was coming down with the flu, I'd just drink some really salty water and go to bed, and felt much better the next day. Never had to see a doctor or take OTC medication, and definitely didn't have to eat that horrible congee just plain like that again.
It's nasty going down, and it's nasty puking it back up again, so I just recommend that you eat it as fast as possible, because the stuff really does make you better faster, or your alternative would be to flush it down the toilet (done this too). Soy sauce never helps the congee, but if you are determined to make your congee taste better without the hassle of adding a whole bunch of stuff, tell your parents to add chicken to the congee, and when they give it to you, add sesame oil, some white pepper, and some soy sauce. Add some chives if you want too. It'll definitely perk it up.

Depending on your illness, plain congee is the best to line your stomach with bland food so you can take your medicine. Taken very hot, the congee will make you sweat, which is good when you have a fever. There are many things one can add to plain congee: preserved vegetables, salted egg yok, century eggs, sesame oil, salted black beans, preserved tofu bean cake, garlic chili sauce, shredded dried beef or pork, hard boiled eggs, soft boiled eggs, green onions, Chinese roast pork, Chinese sausage.

You can add beef broth, ground beef, sliced tomatoes and small cubes of carrots and make into porridge instead.
The carrots has to be cook first as it is hard.
You can add chicken broth and shredded chicken too but not if you are coughing as chinese believe you should not eat chicken when when you are coughing.
If you cant eat beef you can add pickled mustard green into the plain congee. However I find that it is not nutritious unless it is accompanied by a steam fish in sour plum sauce.

my mum always makes me scallop porridge, with a little ginko nuts, salt and soy sauce to taste. if you like add a little mince pork. i have it even when i am not sick ><. Ooo for better texture of the congee boil it in slow cooker.
there's a reason to have it plain, as it will not add to burden of your digestion.
