Thanks for the mature replies. I'm getting married and my wife wants to know at least that I'll be safe. If I was a pussy I wouldn't be considering going in the military.

Army wife- I didn't ask if I was ready for the military or not. I asked a simple question and not for your opinion. I just want facts. Sorry my question made you want to bash me. I want to be in the military. My wife does support me. She supports me even if I go over seas. I was just wondering? Thanks.

Coast Guard is your best bet. Upon successful completion of boot camp you have a choice of billets (assignements) presented to you, depending on your standing in your recruit company you can have first choice of assignments or last choice of assignments.

Your choices are typically Cutters (Ships), or stations (small boats located stateside). Cutters have a higher likelyhood of being stationed with Navy battle groups and are typically located off shore for law enforcement support (ship boardings, etc...) in war time theaters. Coast Guard members that are typically stationed onland (ie Iraq...)are reserves and are attached to port security units and deployed in much the same way as Nat'l guard, active duty members rarely see "action" landside.

There is never any guarantee that you won't get deployed overseas in any branch of the military, and realistically, how many Coast Guard Cutters have you heard ever getting attacked by terrorists?

Stateside stations are located in every major harbor and port, including the Great Lakes and the Coast Guard offers many different career options besides the typical Machinist Mate and Boatswain Mate ratings.

There is no branch or job that will keep you from the possiblity of deployment. Also, there is no job or branch that will keep you solely stationed in the US. These are two seperate "over seas" assignments. Most folks join the military, at least in part, because they would like to live in another country at some point. Deployment into battle zones or as support for forward deployed troops is what the military is about. While I understand your wife's feelings, and understand you want to be able to reassure her, there are no garuntees about anything in the military, ever. It is however, a wonderful life for those who are willing to put up with the craziness. In the end, only you and your wife can decide what to do, but you both need to be prepared for the military taking priority and having the final say while you serve.

The Coast Guard use to be in the Department of the Interior and only was put under control of the Department of Defense during a war. Now the Coast Guard is in the Department of Homeland Security. Unlikely you would get sent overseas.

All you would have to deal with is drug smugglers, illegal immigrants coming in by ship and pirates. You would also have to deal with rescue operations in bad weather. Not dangerous at all.

You might consider joining the US Public Health Service as a commissioned officer. All the pay and benefits of being an officer and all you have to do is take care of Coast Guardsmen and Indians. Even safer.

Sounds to me like you have to make a choice, serve your nation without qualifications or dump the wife. With that kind of support at home, your military career will be pure misery.

Coast Guard, but either way any branch you have a chance of going over seas war times or not. If your wife doesn't like this then you shouldn't join.

So technically the answer to your question is a big fat NO

Coast Guard but that isn't all that safe. You better stay home.
Army Wife knows. My ex wife pretty much took out my career.
Aren't you afraid of your soon to be spouse? A little immature? Think about it before you go off on someone..

I don't think so. All branches of the military have stations or assignments overseas. Nobody in there ever stays on US soil for the entire term of service.

No. All the services, including the Coast Guard, have people in country in Iraq and supporting roles all over the world. If any recruiter promises you won't be deployed in any service, he's lying.

Coast Guard?? Maybe?? Stick with the ships if your worried about real combat. Navy is probably the safest in the current types of wars we fight in
