This used to be the case.

Slightly out of date info.

Tate and Lyle have confirmed no bone char filters are used in thier sugar anymore - they removed them about 2002.

Some white sugars still use oyster shells and bone to colour sugar. the more refined it is, the worse it gets ( normally )

Most sugar in processed food is ok as its not coloured or refined using bones.

We stick to unrefined or raw sugars anyway, just in case.

The page you quote is from a statement by someone in Vermont Vegan Society - its a private article. If you want the truth ask the manufacturers or a respected society:

try this quote from the International Vegetarian Union:

Some refined sugars use bone charcoal as a decolourant. In the UK Tate and Lyle and Billingtons sugars are free of animal substances. British Sugar, trading as Silver Spoon (the largest UK supplier) state that their white sugar is vegan but they cannot guarantee their brown sugars as some bone charcoal may be used by their suppliers.

there are several alternatives: raw, turbinado, beet sugar, succanat, date sugar, fructose, barley malt, rice syrup, corn syrup, molasses, and maple syrup.

It depends on how you define 'vegan.' Refined sugars do not contain any animal products, and so by an ingredients-based definition of vegan, refined sugar is vegan. However, some refined sugar is processed with animal bone char. The charcoal is used to remove color, impurities, and minerals from sugar. The charcoal is not 'in' the sugar, but is used in the process as as a filter. Thus by a process-based definition of vegan, refined sugar may not be considered vegan

You're such an alarmist. Much sugar is processed this way, especially the sugar used in many candies and snacks. However, plenty of REFINED white sugar is bone char free. Look it up, rather than assume all of it is like that.

white sugar isnt colored with bones, it is filtered through bone char. while vegans avoid this, ive never heard it is strictly non-vegetarian. brown sugar is one alternative, but you can also fine turbinado sugar which is also called raw sugar. you can get it at any grocery store right next to the white sugar. good for you for doing your research!

Yeah animal cartilage is in a lot of things.

I try to stear clear of the 'super' market anyway, fresh whole produce is tastier, cheaper, better for you and doesnt have cryptic ingredients lists.

i dont even like sugar :/

The bone char that you are referring to is not in the the sugar when you buy it.

The same materials are used in many water treatment facilities.
Are you going to stop using tap water if your treatment facility uses animal products?

If you are worried about what is used in processing, nothing that comes in a package is okay to eat. Every machine used to make or package it and every vehicle used to transport it is less than 100% animal-free.

yes I knew this and its unavoidable because sugar's in everything. I do buy the natural sugar, though.
Yeah, they use ground up cow or pig bones to bleach the sugar-thus turning it white.

Brown sugar is just plain old white sugar with molasses stirred in. The molasses is highly processed with numerous additives.

"Raw" sugar is also highly processed, especially related to molds common in cane sugar and is not suitable for people with mold allergies.
http://www.communati.com/main/natural-sweeteners-raw-sugar

Plain old sugar is NATURALLY white. It's a natural white crystalline chemical. Any "brown" sugar" is white sugar with additives.
