I have a blood test scheduled to test my cholesterol after a twelve hour fast to be done this week. I hadn't planned on doing it today but I just woke up, it's been twelve hours since I ate but I had a black cup of decaf about seven hours ago... what's the consequences of that on the test? Is it absolutely necessary to wait for another day?

This will effect the result, just give a hint to your consulting doctor what you ate. It is advisable that you take a second test, to be honest I don't like playing with somebody life, just that he will have the test on the next day or at the earliest. We take lipid profile very seriously, to prevent complications.
I will classify this test UNRELIABLE.

a black cup of decaf won't change your test results in the least. Go have the test. I've worked in a medical lab for 20 years. Dr.'s used to think everything would change the results of a lipid test but they have slowly come to realize things that are basically flavored water with no fat, sugar or caffine aren't going to change anything.
