Burrito is where the flour tortilla is heated and not fried. Chimichanga is fried.
CAITLIN - These are American fast foods, not found in Mexico. I never heard of a Chimichanga until I came to the States. Our fast food looks every different that burritos and chimichangas.

A chimichanga is a fried burrito. Story is, a cook dropped a freshly made burrito into the hot fat and said, "Chimichanga!" He was trying not to say really bad swear words in Spanish. This may be hyperbole, but I think it's a sweet story. Also good to eat!

A chimichanga has more fat and calories from the oil used to deep fry the burrito that becomes the chimichanga!

I waited tables in a mexican restaurant for several years. Here's how we decribed the difference
A burrito is usually a flour tortilla filled with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sometimes beans and rice. It is then rolled up, covered on the outside with sauce and usually has cheese put on top. Then it is baked in an oven.
A chimichanga is a flour tortilla with meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato rolled into it. It is then deep fried. Then it is covered with sauce and we did not put cheese on top.
