are lo-mein noodles just plain old spaghetti cooked "chinese style"? I mean literally, are they just spaghetti noodles or some other kind of noodle?

Lo-mein noodles should be thicker than spaghetti. Technically they should be like udon noodles which are sold in the Asian foods section of the supermarket.

typically lo-mein is made from fresh noodles while spaghetti is make from dry noodles, as a result the fresh noodles have a softer bite to them while the dry noodles are firmer.
