Never happens during normal sleep, ONLY when dozing in front of the TV in bed, Don't think it is sleep apnea, but what?

When you sleep in bed normally, you probably sleep with your head tilted back a little, just like it would be for First Aid. This allows the epiglottis to stay against the back of the throat and not block your breathing. When you watch TV, you probably tilt your head forward, and maybe sit up a bit. This new configuration allows your epiglottis to easily fall forward to block your breathing, and causes sleep apnea. Normal air pressure from your breathing must be enough to keep the epiglottis back when you are laying down normally, but fails to be enough when you watch TV.

You are probably not laying in a normal sleeping position because you are propped up to watch TV. This could be sleep apnea but only a sleep study will tell you for sure.

Go to the Doc and get a sleep study. It could be apnea, or a bunch of other things. The only way to know is to get it checked out!

That is sleep apnea. You stopped breathing and your brain became aware of it. That is why you woke up gasping.

It sounds like sleep apnea. Do you snore very loudly? That's part of it, I believe.
