i always read in news paper that so ans so convicted for stealing or murdering got a sentence for 50 years or 90 years. i dont understand that if a person is already 60 or morethan that or even 50 year old can serve such a long term in side the prison and if he dies during this period what happens to the balance sentence.

They die in prison. Their victim did not get a choice of the timing, either. If you can't do the time don't do the crime.

This is done because many crimes have standard ranges of prison terms that one would face, regardless of their current age. If it just so happens that the prison term someone faces means they could be in jail until they are 150 years old, so be it. When a person dies in prison, the prison term is completed. The years left are now gone. Also, prosecutors might use this as a way to guarantee someone will spend the rest of their life in prison, in a situation where a true "life sentence" is not possible.

Actually when you get sentenced by years you get a chance to probation after so many years and good behavior. This guy could be out on the streets in five years if the board approves. When is life sentence that's when they stay in jail forever.

Prison time and world time is not the same. Prison time is shorter.

what I don't understand is when these inmates are already serving a life sentence then they develop this lifer attitude and commit a killing while in prison. Why give them another life sentence on top of that? we have the most reoccurring crimes in the civil world as far as inmates go.

The prisoner dies in prison and the balance of the sentence dies with him too.
