I have 105,000 miles on my Volvo. Other than getting an oil change at every 3,000 miles, what are other neccessary services I need. I know I need one every 30,000, but do I need one every 5,000? My mechanic says I do. Is he telling me truth? What's the difference between a service and tune up?

Oil change with 10W30 every 5000. Running 5W30 for winter is better. But not necessary. Mann oil filter or Volvo OE should be used for the life of the engine.

Timing belt replacement interval for B230 engine is every 50,000 miles. Water pump should be replaced in the same time. For every other timing belt replacement, the camshaft oil seal and intermediate shaft oil seal should be replaced or it will develop leak. When combined with the timing belt replacement job, this would just take additional 30 minutes.

Flam trap should be cleaned (or replaced) every 30K. If this gets clugged, the car would crease excessive engine pressure and leak oil all over the engine.

The car has plastic neck Behr radiator. They get brittle and split. Life of the radiator is about 8 years. You can stick with OE radiator and replace every 8 years or change to aftermarket metal radiator. I would replace all coolant hoses in the same time.

Spark plugs, wires, and distributor, rotors should be replaced every 60K. At 120K, the Bosch alternator brush/voltage regulator should be replaced. The alternator should last for the life of the car, but the voltage regulator/brush requires replacement every 100K or so.

Around 150K, the second fuel pump (inside of the fuel tank) will go. Easy job, but that bung nut is pain in the butt to remove.

In front of the fuel filter is a fuel check valve, which usually fails around 150K or so. if this fails, you would have difficult start problem. Fuel filter should be replaced every 50K miles, and fuel check valve should be replaced every 100K.

Throttle body should be cleaned every 100K or car will stall every time you stop.

Every 30K, the valve gap requires adjustment or the camshaft would wear out and cause valve timing problem around 200K.

Transmission fluid should be drained and replaced every 30K. Differential fluid should be drained & replaced every 90K. There is no drain plug in differential so you will have to use something to suck it out.

Between 100K - 150K, the heater blower motor and OD meter would go. There isn't much you can do to prevent it. The car would also require engine mount and transmission mount replacement (you can usually tell by engine shaking. Sometimes the gear would not go in from Park to Drive)

every 3k oil services at 6k intervals preform flame trap service
at 15k intervals replace the air filter spark plugs have been lasting 30k at 60k intervals a full major service is reccomended to include cap, rotor, wires, plugs, flame trap, fuel filter, air filter, throttle body cleaning, valve adjustment, timing belt replacement, and drive belts, transmission fluid and filter service, and drain and refill of both the coling system and differential gear lube. every second timing belt you should also install the belt tensioner and a waterpump and give a juandiced eye to cooling system hoses [this approach to service has netted both myself[i own 3 two series volvo's] and my customers 200k 300k and plus mileages. these cars will be around as long as a owner wants them [no experation date] as long as service is maintained.[mine are 2 1979's 242 &245 and a 1989 wagon]

NO, you should change your plugs every 30,000, do a fuel filter air filter, ignition cap and rotor, plugs and plug wires every 60,000, timing belt and accesory belts at 90,000, oil changes every 3000. Trans and coolant service should be done every 30,000 as well.
