my friend went to buy something from a shop. He then handed over his credit card for payment. The cashier questioned him that the card isn't signed in the back, so he cannot accept credit card. My friend then agreed to sign the card there, but the cashier then asks friend to show ID. My friend then shows his driver license but even then the cashier refused to accept ---- cashier said name on credit card is too common, and many people have that name.

Friend's name is Joe Smith. The credit card really belonged to him, and even after showing license he is still rejected sale.

who is at fault and what to do in such situation?

Joe says he feels utterly humiliated and harassed by the cashier and is still upset.

most stores have swipe pads where the customer swipes card himself there and cashier has no business touching customer card for any reason. Gas stations, grocery stores, retail stores, they all have such equipment. From next time he is not shopping at any place where cashier molests the card.

The cashier sounds like a power-crazed little jobsworth. Your pal should have called the manager.

Read the back of the credit card: IT SAYS NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED. Signing in front of the cashier is NOT what that means. If there was such an issue, your friend should have asked to see a MANAGER and get the manager's decision. But knowing the card needed to be signed to be valid, WHY DID HE NOT SIGN IT ? Also, the banks have advised that you can sign a card with SEE IDENTIFICATION in the signature block, but NEVER NEVER NEVER leave it blank.

i think a cashier is within their rights to refuse to accept an unsigned card-even though i certainly believe your story. unfortunately there is so much credit card fraud and identity theft they are just being extra careful. i am glad they are that stringent as it means we - including joe-will be protected just incase anyone does get hold of our cards,
