You already have alot of answers that are right on the money. My son began bootcamp April 2, 2007 and will deploy in 2/08 sometime. All things considered, boot camp, MCT/MOS training and most likely 6 months acclamation into a new unit - you could be looking at 10 months to a little over a year before you see a hot zone and as someone mentioned, not everyone goes right to the front. I hope you join. The Marines have a glorious history and you can feel it when you step one foot on base. We have maintained a detailed website for our son and I would invite you to visit it. It has alot of information and pictures of what goes on. Your parents might like looking at it. Go to "caseybills.googlepages.com" Don't put www. in front of it. Just type it in and go. Also, when you graduate boot camp you will want your parents or at the very least a couple of close friends or family to attend. I can help you get a couple of free airline tickets, but can only do it before you join. Email or call me if you're interested.
Good LUCK!!

As a Marine, you will be able to choose an occupational field. Once done with boot camp, you will have ten days leave (vacation). Then you will attend Marine Combat Training.....learning the basics of being and infantry Marine......all Marines in MOS's other than infantry attend this, it is about 4 weeks. Following that, you will attend your MOS school, length depends on MOS. After MOS school, you will arrive at your new duty station, and be intigrated into your new unit. How long until you deploy after that varies, but normally will have at least 6 months with the unit before a deployment in order to get the additional training and also get used to your role within the unit. Your leaders will ensure you are prepared before you deploy.

After Bootcamp you'll go to Marine Combat Training (MCT), and then to your MOS School. Unless your going to be a grunt then your MOS School will be SOI (School of Infantry) and you'll by-pass MCT. Sometime during you MOS school you'll find out where your duty station will be and you'll report in there after your graduation. How long it is until you deploy will depend on when the company or unit your with is up for deployment. If you go to a unit that has just gotten back then the chances of you deploying soon will lessen. If you get sent to a unit that is getting ready to deploy then you'll be going with them. But you won't deploy over there without going through MCT and your MOS school. The Marines aren't going send over a Marine that isn't fully trained.

Back in the days of WW2 and Korea Marines went straight from boot camp to line units. Today you will have to go through MCT/ SOI and your MOS school first. Then to a unit that will deploy. It might be anywhere from 9 months to never before you see Iraq. That depends on what unit you go to.

I was in the Marines and once you finish boot camp. Then I spent 6 mos. training for com.Nav.Weapons aiming. After that you are assigned to your unit. and you go where they go. You can expect to be in a combat zone.
The truth is you can die crossing the street. I was in from 1971 to 1982 and proud that I was able to serve our great county. Chance's are when you go you will transport by Navy
ship. The taring is the best and believe it or not service men today enjoy more support from the general public then we did back in the 70's and 80's

Of course they would send you to mos school first. And mct before that. You would go to a unit, which may or may not be deployable (depending on your mos), and you would deploy depending on their schedule. You would probably have several months to train with them before leaving. You may not even be necessarily "sent to war", as the Marine Corps has non combat deployments as well.
