If you go for a regular checkup, xrays called 'bitewings' will be taken.... one or two on each side, depending on the size of the films and your mouth. These are the ones that detect decay better, since they show the interproximal (between the teeth) area. These films only show the top portion of the teeth and not the root area....

Periapical xrays are good for those who only wish to have a problem diagnosed. In addition to the tooth/teeth, including the root, the surrounding area is also seen on the film... if there's an abscess, you're sure to see it!

While it is recommended to have a full set of xrays done to see what's going on in the entire mouth, I can understand your concern since you have to pay out of pocket. Hopefully the office where you go will allow a payment plan of some kind so you'll be able to address your dental needs without having to wait..... and before whatever is 'wrong' gets worse.

Best of luck to you!

:)

You might want to read these items about xrays:

http://www.doctorspiller.com/Dental%20_X-Rays.htm

http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/necessary_x-rays.htm

The first one tells you what happens if you see the dentist without getting xrays and the second describes the different types.

If you have cavities now, you need to spend money now or you could end up in surgery... I know, I just had 6 teeth pulled and I thought I only had a small problem when I went in.

They will work with you on payment options but your situation will never get BETTER by itself.

g-day!
