The texts advise, it is better to avoid worshipping Idols at Home,unless initiated by an worthy Ascetic. They can be worshipped only in temple.Home "Worshipping" idols(show - piece type is different) should not be more than 6 to 9 inches height.

Normally,you can have any height depending on your preference.However,if you are going to place the idol at home shrine for puja,the height of the idol is to be decided by the silpi.The silpi will select 5 specific metals to make the idol.Before he makes it, he would ask for the horoscopes of the husband and the wife .He calculates the size of the idol appropriate for your family puja by carefully discerning from the horoscopes.This is the tradition followed in Tamil Nadu.If you wish to know further details ,please email me.
