I was chatting around the other day, and I met someone online.
He only speaks Spanish. He tells me he's an illegal immigrant living in the USA living off from cutting people's grass.
I asked him how long was he lived in the USA, he tells me 3 years.
I was surprised he hadn't learned English yet, but I was even more surprised when he mentioned he lived near a library.
So I told him he should go there as much as he could, and read all of the English learning material such as tapes, books, and videos.

He tells me he's affraid of going there because they ask you for an ID.
I tell him they only do that when you want to borrow books from them.

Should illegal immigrants be encouraged to go to public libraries and make some good use of the material?

yes, of course they should be encouraged.
I mean, the skills of reading english is a predomanintly english speaking country.
So yes, he should go down to the library and learn to read and speak some english, whether he is illegal or not.

Learning English doesn't solve the problem of those who have broken our laws and are illegally here. The real question is do we as a country want to stop illegal immigration or not. If the answer is yes, which I believe it should be, we should check the status of all that want to avail themselves of any public service, including libraries, except for emergency services. Bettering themselves at our expense is not fair to those who need the limited resources
I do not think the ability to go to the library is the issue in your posting , if your on line friend has mastered the Internet and has access to a computer, getting materials to learn English should not be issue.

Public libraries are for American people. Tiny children go there for storytime and I would not like the idea of an illegal lying in wait for one of them. Sorry, no benefits for illegals, none!

That's a double edged sword. On one hand free education to be gotten at a local library should not be denied anyone. Then again he is illegal, so by allowing him what is free to Americans is promoting that being illegal really means nothing. So, since I have children, I say no, he should not be allowed to. You give them an inch, and next thing you know they've stolen a mile. Tough question! Ultimately though, I do have to think about my children, their home, their future!

Since he's illegal, he should leave the country and come back in legally.
Then he can go to the library any dang time he pleases.

Yes they should go to libraries actually everyone legal and illegal could benefit from going to a library.

Too many don't pick up a book anymore instead they watch TV.

If these people are able to get more educated and maybe going to a library might make them more willing to learn the system and go on a path to legalization. I'm all for it.

It would benefit the population as a whole if they would go to libraries sine it would help them become more educated.

Well, I don't think illegal immigration should be subsidized (through measures such as welfare/unemployment/social security, education for their children, birthright citizenship, free emergency room care etc.), but I have no problem with illegal immigrants who come into the country as guest workers (and we don't need a guest worker "program" to have guest workers). There also should be no penalties for employers, no ID card requirements (ID card requirements are a characteristic of a totalitarian country), and no border enforcement or fences (which are unnecessary if illegal immigrants aren't being subsidized).

Since it doesn't cost taxpayers anything if an illegal immigrant goes into a public library and reads books there, I see no problem with it.

I think everyone should be encourage to go to the library, and not just the homeless so they could find a warm place to sleep.

I am against illegal immigration, but education is sacred to me.

Well, people here are constantly complaining that illegal immigrants refuse to learn English and fit in to American culture. So encouraging them to go to libraries would be a good idea. We can't really expect them to fit into American culture if we don't give them an opportunity.

And besides, no library in the US checks your immigration status. Any library in the US will give you a library card with a foreign passport (proof of ID) and utility bill (proof of address).

Hm. If I went to Mexico, I think I should be able to go to their library if I don't check out books.

Tell you what. Suggest he read the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo in the original. It is Spanish on one side and English on the other side, and very educational.

illegal immigrants should all be deported back to their home. If they come back legally I will gladly help them learn English if they need help, but until we know they are not criminals fleeing something. They should go home and hide from me because I would not hesitate to turn them in.
